Transendence
On March 6, 2023, I snowshoed into Artist Point near the Mt. Baker ski area. I was with my nephew, Matt Bergsma. Adventure and photographic treasure were on our agenda. It was close to 1000 feet of vertical we had to conquer to get to our destination. At the base of Table Mountain is a windy ridge where huge snow drifts pile up in the winter. It was a challenging day. We departed from the upper parking lot in the sunshine. As we ascended, clouds began to build. Snowflakes began to fall as we neared the top, reminding us that weather changes rapidly here. The fear of having it close in with minimal visibility was palpable, but we persisted. Luckily, the cloud cover began to break up. We found this location with dramatic drifts. An earnest attempt to capture images began. Fortunately, rapidly changing light conditions graced this particular location. It was magical. Thin layers of high clouds filtered the sun into soft pools of light that moved as the wind jostled the low clouds. Patches of blue broke through, creating an added sense of depth. Matt and I were lucky!!!! Moments like these became as treasured as the day.
