This is the Open Edition of "San Juan Summer Storm." It was captured on a medium format camera using film. The location is on the Samish Overlook at the south end of Chuckanut Mountain.

In August of 1998, I followed an old logging road from the south end of Lake Samish up to the Samish Overlook at the Southern edge of Chuckanut Mountain. I have reflected from time to time on the feelings I had while driving a Ford Explorer over that rough and dusty road. The road was rather primitive back then, and of course, there was the small token warning sign at its base that you were leaving "maintained roads" and to "travel at your own risk." I apprehensibly entered. Getting stuck on back roads like this is a story for another time. It has happened to me! Upon approaching the top, the tall evergreens began to thin, and there were a few "peekaboo" views of the treasure I was searching for. A large landing area for logging was at its end. I was completely awestruck by what appeared before me. A totally open and unobstructed view of the San Juan Islands, Samish Bay, the Olympics, and a raging sky filled with broken and windswept clouds was at my creative disposal. The late afternoon light was building upon the "golden hour" look so many photographers treasure. I suppose a magic rainbow was too much to ask for. Capturing this final image as the settled just below the horizon clouds felt like "victory." The ride to the top provided rewards beyond my dreams.
