Shallow Bay is one of my favorite anchorages in The San Juan Islands. It is on the northwest end of Sucia Island, and it is a well-protected harbor from most winds. If a westerly wind comes up in the middle of the night you may be in for an uncomfortable experience. My wife Bev and I chose to anchor in a position allowing us to watch the sun sink below the horizon in the west. Of course, it was a beautiful evening. We dined on the back deck and had several toasts to our good fortune. But, as the sky darkened and we had gone to bed, I could hear the breeze begin to pick up. It was awful as 2 to 3-foot swells were rolling into the anchorage. We were getting our asses kicked all night long in our 23-foot boat. Luckily our anchors held fast, but halyards were bangin', loud voices in the dark sounded out frustration, and anchors were dragging. It was a valuable lesson on letting beauty come before making a bad decision.
