I love my boating visits to the San Juan Islands. My wife Bev and I often make an overnight stop in Deer Harbor on Orcas Island. Madrona trees are quite plentiful in certain areas.
Just across the harbor is a tall cliff with several madrona trees that hang over the edge. I knew that to do these trees justice in a photograph would require being there at the moment of sunrise. From the harbor, the shortest route is to paddle to another moorage area just across the bay. I could tie the skiff up there. It was about a half-hour steep hike from the dock to the top of the cliff. Carrying a heavy pack containing medium format camera gear was exhausting. Luckily, I arrived in time to capture this image of a madrona at first light. The sailboat became a bonus.
