On the 8th of October, 2022, Bev and I made a last-ditch effort to travel to Roche Harbor. Our summer season was closing out. Fall had descended into those familiar cool nights, and winterizing our boat was a close eventuality. On that day, an unusually warm, calm, and beautiful afternoon presented itself. We decided to take the boat out to Open Bay. Upon arriving there, I pulled back on the throttle, and we came to rest in the glassy calm water. I shut the engine down, to allow us to drift on the tide. The peaceful quiet that surrounded us was uplifting and palpable.
At that moment, I felt compelled to "get creative." Out came the camera. Over 150 exposures were captured during two hours adrift on Haro Straight. Long-exposure images of water in motion, different textures and waves, birds, skies, clouds, and sailboats returning from Victoria, British Columbia, were made. "Adrift" is a photographic journey illustrating the joy of being suspended in a calm state of mind. In the end, "Adrift" was created in a thought-laden process as a composite image using five different frames.
